Intake, Enrollment & Candidacy

Application & Intake Process

R-5 High School provides an alternative educational choice setting open to all students ages 16 to 21.  However, as a school of choice, space is limited and all prospective students must apply for entry.  As an alternative school, R-5 offers a narrower range of elective choices than found in a traditional high school. The application and enrollment process is designed to ensure a match between the school's program and course offerings and the student's needs.  Students may obtain an application by visiting the school office or print the registration form here.  Students will be asked to complete a NWEA testing at the R-5 campus as a apart of the application process to determine reading and math level and needs.  Completed applications should be submitted to the main office.  The application materials will be reviewed for information, completion and signatures.

Once the completed application and STAR scores are on file and it is determined that student meets the R-5 criteria, then the student will be placed on the R-5 Waiting List, and a R-5 secretary will call to schedule an interview with one of our counselors or administrators.  During the interview, we will assess the student's educational needs and goals.  The student will have the opportunity to explain why they wish to attend R-5 High School, their goals and aspirations, educational experiences, and academic history.  Once it has been verified that R-5 can provide an appropriate learning program for the student, he/she will then be given a student handbook, a training agreement to fill out, and an invitation to attend the Student and Family Orientation Night; which precedes the student's projected start date.  R-5 is structured around 20-day cycles of learning, and the student will be invited to begin the first day of the next available cycle.

Candidacy

Upon entering R-5, students must have a signed training agreement for a job or volunteer position, be enrolled in Career Center or Western Colorado Community College, or be enrolled in a 6th hour vocational intervention at R-5, beginning with the PoWeR class.  Students are in candidacy during this ten-day trial period.  Candidacy is explained during the Orientation Night.  During Candidacy, the student must demonstrate commitment to his/her education at R-5 by physically attending all classes a minimum of 85%, actively engaging in each class, demonstrating readiness for R-5 and participating in vocational training.  Two or more absences in this ten day period will bring the student below 85% attendance and may result in not meeting candidacy.  Failure to meet candidacy results in the student losing his/her status as an R-5 student.  Students who do not meet the candidacy requirements may be invited to reenter on candidacy on a future 20-day cycle and/or may always reapply at a future date.  Upon successful completion of Candidacy, the student is an official member of the R-5 student body and will receive the full benefit of our programs and interventions!
