Application Process

Application & Candidacy

IMPORTANT:   All referrals to attend R5 will need to come from your home school, either from the counseling office or administration.  Plan to attend your home school until we notify you that there is space available.

Applying does not guarantee admission into R5 High School.

NOTE: You must be at least 16 years old on the start date to start at R-5, unless you are interested in our Young Parents Program as an expecting teen.

R5 High School is an alternative style education setting, however, limited enrollment is available and potential candidates are expected to value their opportunity by following attendance, academic, and behavior policies.  If a learner chooses to not follow the school's policies, they may be dismissed from R5 and return to their home school.   There is a formal admission process that includes an application and potentially a student interview.  If you are not accepted for enrollment and still want to be considered for a later enrollment date (typically at each quarter), please have your high school counselor complete the R5 Referral form.

If you would still like to apply and be placed on a waitlist, continue with the step below.

Step 1: Application
Please have your counselor fill out the referral form provided by R5 High School. This will start the registration process and let us know you are interested in attending R-5 at some point. Again, this does not mean you are enrolled in R5 High School. A staff member from R5 will notify you if you have been accepted. Acceptance is based on seat availability and whether or not R5 is able to meet your academic and social-emotional needs.
NOTE: If you are a current R5 learner and in good standing, you do not need to re-apply. You will only need to complete the required District registration paperwork annually as always.

Step 2:  Candidacy Requirement

Upon entering R-5, learners must have a signed training agreement for a job or volunteer position, or be enrolled in Career Center or Western Colorado Community College, or be enrolled in a 7th and 8th hour vocational intervention once admitted to R-5. Learners are in candidacy during their first semester at R-5. During candidacy, the learner must demonstrate commitment to his/her education at R-5 by physically attending all classes a minimum of 90%, actively engaging in each class, demonstrating readiness for R-5 and participating in vocational training.  Failure to meet candidacy results in the learner losing his/her status as an R-5 learner and you will need to return to your home school or alternate educational placement. Learners who do not meet the candidacy requirements can always re-apply at a future date. Upon successful completion of candidacy, the learner is an official member of the R-5 student body.  Attendance, academic progress, and respectful behavior is expected and required to remain an R5 learner.
